SEO Basics Part 2
URL Structure
SEO and URL structure can be a huge plus point, start with the obvious, if a searcher is looking for red hats and you own the domain red-hats.com you are very likely to be found.
You cannot buy a domain for every topic you do, but hats.com will help your SEO to sell yellow hats, red hats, and green hats.
So a great URL structure will be ‘love-your-hats.com/red-hats.html’ or if you sellĀ clothing in general it could be urban-clothing.com/hats/red-hats./html.
Creating descriptive categories and pages on your website can not only help you keep your site better organized, but it could also lead to better crawling of your documents by search engines.
Don’t forget your URL’s are displayed in the search engine results not just SEO.
Also, it can create easier, “friendlier” URLs for those that want to link to your content.
Visitors may be intimidated by extremely long and cryptic URLs that contain few recognizable words.
Things to avoid with URL’s
- using directory names that have no relation to the content in them
- having deep nesting of sub directories like “…/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6/red-hats.html”
- using excessive keywords like”red-hats/hats/lovely-hats/my-hats.html”
- using lengthy URLs with unnecessary sub category’s
- do not use session IDs
If you can try to provide one way of reaching a page URL that you want to be in the search engine results, there are simple ways to deal with this.
I pref ere using input rel=”canonical” link or redirect. I will be writing a separate document on these topics as they are subjects in there own right.
For the mean time here is some reference material for canonical link by Google Here.
